English Translation

ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī narrated to us, Sufyān narrated to us, from Salamah — meaning Ibn Kuhayl — from Abū Mālik and ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abzā, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abzā who said: We were with ʿUmar when a man came to him and said: 'O Commander of the Believers, we sometimes stay a month or two without finding water.' ʿUmar said: 'As for me, I would not pray until I found water.' ʿAmmār said: 'O Commander of the Believers, do you remember when we were at such-and-such a place, and we were tending the camels, and you know that we became ritually impure?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I rolled around in the dust and came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him. He laughed and said: Pure earth would have sufficed you. He struck the ground with his palms, then blew into them, then wiped his face and part of his forearms with them.' He said: 'Fear Allah, O ʿAmmār.' He said: 'O Commander of the Believers, if you wish, I shall never mention it as long as I live.' He said: 'No, by Allah! Rather, we leave you to bear what you have taken upon yourself.'
