حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ زَكَرِيَّا قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا حَجَّاجٌ عَنْ حُسَيْنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الْجَدَلِيِّ قَالَ خَطَبَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ فِي الْيَوْمِ الَّذِي يُشَكُّ فِيهِ فَقَالَ أَلَا إِنِّي قَدْ جَالَ
سْتُ أَصْحَابَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَسَأَلْتُهُمْ أَلَا وَإِنَّهُمْ حَدَّثُونِي أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ صُومُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَفْطِرُوا لِرُؤْيَتِهِ وَأَنْ تَشَكُّوا لَهَا فَإِنْ غُمَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَتِمُّوا ثَلَاثِينَ وَإِنْ شَهِدَ شَاهِدَانِ مُسْلِمَانِ فَصُومُوا وَأَفْطِرُوا

English Translation
Yaḥyā ibn Zakariyyā narrated to us, Ḥajjāj informed us, from Ḥusayn ibn al-Ḥārith al-Jadalī who said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Zayd ibn al-Khaṭṭāb gave a sermon on the day of doubt [the uncertain day between Shaʿbān and Ramaḍān] and said: 'Indeed, I have sat with the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and asked them, and they told me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Fast upon sighting it, and break your fast upon sighting it. And if there is doubt, then if it is obscured from you, complete thirty days. And if two Muslim witnesses testify [to sighting the crescent], then fast and break your fast [accordingly].'
