English Translation

Yaʿqūb — meaning Ibn Ibrāhīm — narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from al-Walīd ibn Kathīr, Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn Ḥalḥalah al-Duʾalī narrated to me that Ibn Shihāb narrated to him that ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to him: When they arrived in Madīnah from [the court of] Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah after the killing of Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī, al-Miswar ibn Makhramah met him and said: 'Do you have any need of me that I can fulfill for you?' I said: 'No.' He said: 'Will you give me the sword of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? For I fear the people may seize it from you. By Allah, if you give it to me, no one shall ever reach it as long as my soul remains in my body. ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib proposed to the daughter of Abū Jahl while married to Fāṭimah, and I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressing the people about that on this pulpit of his — and I was at that time of the age of puberty. He said: Fāṭimah is a part of me, and I fear she will be tried in her religion.' He then mentioned a son-in-law of his from Banū ʿAbd Shams and praised him for his marriage tie with him, saying: 'He spoke to me and was truthful, and he promised me and fulfilled. I do not forbid the lawful nor permit the forbidden, but by Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the daughter of the enemy of Allah shall never be in the same place.'
