Chain of Narration (Isnad)

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْيَمَانِ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ أَخْبَرَنِي عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُسَيْنٍ أَنَّ الْمِسْوَرَ بْنَ مَخْرَمَةَ أَخَبَرَهُ أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ خَطَبَ ابْنَةَ أَبِي جَهْلٍ وَعِنْدَهُ فَاطِمَةُ ابْنَةُ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَلَمَّا سَمِعَتْ بِذَلِكَ فَاطِمَةُ أَتَتْ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ لَهُ إِنَّ قَوْمَكَ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ أَنَّكَ لَا تَغْضَبُ لِبَنَاتِكَ وَهَذَا عَلِيٌّ نَاكِحٌ ابْنَةَ أَبِي جَهْلٍ قَالَ الْمِسْوَرُ فَقَام

َ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَمِعْتُهُ حِينَ تَشَهَّدَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَّا بَعْدُ فَإِنِّي أَنْكَحْتُ أَبَا الْعَاصِ بْنَ الرَّبِيعِ فَحَدَّثَنِي فَصَدَقَنِي وَإِنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ مُحَمَّدٍ بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي وَأَنَا أَكْرَهُ أَنْ تَفْتِنُوهَا وَإِنَّهَا وَاللَّهِ لَا تَجْتَمِعُ ابْنَةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَابْنَةُ عَدُوِّ اللَّهِ عِنْدَ رَجُلٍ وَاحِدٍ أَبَدًا قَالَ فَتَرَكَ عَلِيٌّ الْخِطْبَةَ

English Translation

Abū al-Yamān narrated to us, Shuʿayb informed us, from al-Zuhrī, ʿAlī ibn Ḥusayn informed me that al-Miswar ibn Makhramah informed him that ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib proposed to the daughter of Abū Jahl while Fāṭimah, the daughter of the Prophet ﷺ, was his wife. When Fāṭimah heard of this, she went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'Your people say that you do not get angry for your daughters, and here is ʿAlī marrying the daughter of Abū Jahl.' Al-Miswar said: the Prophet ﷺ stood, and I heard him when he bore witness [to the faith], then said: 'As for what follows: I gave my daughter in marriage to Abū al-ʿĀṣ ibn al-Rabīʿ, and he spoke to me and was truthful. Fāṭimah bint Muḥammad is a part of me, and I dislike that she be put to trial. By Allah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the daughter of the enemy of Allah shall never be joined together under one man.' So ʿAlī abandoned the proposal.
