حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النُّعْمَانَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ حُسَيْنٍ عَنِ الْمِسْوَرِ بْنِ مَخْرَمَةَ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا خَطَبَ ابْنَةَ أَبِي جَهْلٍ فَوَعَدَ بِالنِّكَاحِ فَأَتَتْ فَاطِمَةُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَتْ إِنَّ قَوْمَكَ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ أَنَّكَ لَا تَغْضَبُ لِبَنَاتِكَ وَأَنَّ عَل
ِيًّا قَدْ خَطَبَ ابْنَةَ أَبِي جَهْلٍ فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَحَمِدَ اللَّهَ وَأَثْنَى عَلَيْهِ وَقَالَ إِنَّمَا فَاطِمَةُ بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي وَأَنَا أَكْرَهُ أَنْ تَفْتِنُوهَا وَذَكَرَ أَبَا الْعَاصِ بْنَ الرَّبِيعِ فَأَكْثَرَ عَلَيْهِ الثَّنَاءَ وَقَالَ لَا يُجْمَعُ بَيْنَ ابْنَةِ نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ وَبِنْتِ عَدُوِّ اللَّهِ فَرَفَضَ عَلِىٌّ ذَلِكَ

English Translation
Wahb ibn Jarīr narrated to us, my father narrated to us who said: I heard al-Nuʿmān narrating from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAlī ibn Ḥusayn, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, that ʿAlī proposed to marry the daughter of Abū Jahl and promised marriage. Fāṭimah went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'Your people say that you do not get angry for your daughters, and ʿAlī has proposed to the daughter of Abū Jahl.' the Prophet ﷺ stood, praised Allah and extolled Him, and said: 'Fāṭimah is a part of me, and I dislike that she be put to trial.' He mentioned Abū al-ʿĀṣ ibn al-Rabīʿ and praised him greatly, saying: 'The daughter of a prophet of Allah and the daughter of an enemy of Allah shall not be combined [in marriage to one man].' So ʿAlī abandoned that.
