Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq ibn Yasār informed us, from al-Zuhrī Muḥammad ibn Muslim ibn Shihāb, from ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr, from al-Miswar ibn Makhramah and Marwān ibn al-Ḥakam who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out in the year of al-Ḥudaybiyah intending to visit the House [Kaʿbah], not intending war. He drove seventy sacrificial camels with him, and the people numbered seven hundred men, each camel representing ten. He marched until he reached ʿUsfān, where Bishr ibn Sufyān al-Kaʿbī met him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, this is Quraysh. They have heard of your march and have come out with nursing she-camels and their young, wearing leopard skins, pledging to Allah that you shall never enter it by force. And there is Khālid ibn al-Walīd with their cavalry, having advanced to Kurāʿ al-Ghamīm.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Woe to Quraysh! War has consumed them. What harm would it have done them to leave me and the rest of the people alone? If they overcome me, that is what they wanted. If Allah grants me victory over them, they will enter Islam while they are intact. If they refuse, they will fight while they still have strength. What does Quraysh think? By Allah, I will not cease striving for what Allah has sent me with until He makes it prevail or this side of my neck is severed.' Then he ordered the people to take the right path through the midst of the salt-marsh on a road that would bring them out at the pass of al-Mirār and al-Ḥudaybiyah from the lower side of Makkah. The army took that route, and when the cavalry of Quraysh saw the dust of the army having deviated from their path, they retreated back to Quraysh. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ marched until, when he traversed the pass of al-Mirār, his she-camel knelt down. The people said: 'She has balked!' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'She has not balked — that is not her nature. Rather, the One who held back the elephant from Makkah has held her back.' He said: 'By Allah, Quraysh shall not ask me today for any plan in which they seek to maintain the ties of kinship except that I shall grant it to them.' Then he told the people: 'Dismount.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, there is no water in this valley for people to camp upon.' He took an arrow from his quiver and gave it to a man from his Companions, who descended into one of the wells and planted it there, and water gushed forth abundantly until the people watered their animals. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was settled, Budayl ibn Warqāʾ arrived with men of Khuzāʿah. He told them what he had told Bishr ibn Sufyān. They returned to Quraysh and said: 'O people of Quraysh, you are being hasty regarding Muḥammad. Muḥammad has not come for war; he has come only as a visitor to this House, honoring its sanctity.' They suspected them. Al-Zuhrī said: Khuzāʿah — both their Muslims and idolaters — were in the confidence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, concealing nothing from him that happened in Makkah. They said: 'Even if he has come only for that, by Allah he shall never enter it upon us by force, nor shall the Arabs speak of that.' Then they sent Mikraz ibn Ḥafṣ ibn al-Akhyaf to him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said: 'This is a treacherous man.' He spoke to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who spoke to him as he had spoken to the others, then he returned to Quraysh and informed them. They then sent al-Ḥils ibn ʿAlqamah al-Kinānī, who was then the chief of the Aḥābīsh. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said: 'This is from a people who revere [Allah]; send the sacrificial animals before him.' When he saw the sacrificial animals streaming before him through the breadth of the valley with their garlands, having chewed their ropes from the long wait before reaching their place of sacrifice, he went back without reaching the Messenger of Allah ﷺ out of reverence for what he saw. He said: 'O people of Quraysh, I have seen what it is not lawful to prevent — the sacrificial animals in their garlands.' They said: 'Sit down! You are but a Bedouin with no understanding.' Then they sent ʿUrwah ibn Masʿūd al-Thaqafī, who said: 'O people of Quraysh, I have seen how your envoys to Muḥammad are met with harshness and harsh words upon their return. You know that you are as a father to me and I as a son, and I have heard of your trouble and gathered those of my people who obey me, then came to stand by you.' They said: 'You speak the truth and are not suspected by us.' He went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat before him. He said: 'O Muḥammad, you have gathered the riffraff of the people and brought them to your own stronghold to crush it. This is Quraysh, which has come out with nursing she-camels and their young, wearing leopard skins, pledging to Allah that you shall never enter it by force. By Allah, I think these people will scatter away from you tomorrow.' Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq رضي الله تعالى عنه was sitting behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said: 'Go suck the clitoris of al-Lāt! Would we scatter away from him?' He asked: 'Who is this, O Muḥammad?' He said: 'This is Ibn Abī Quḥāfah.' He said: 'By Allah, were it not for a favor you did me, I would have repaid you for that. But let this be for that.' Then he reached for the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah was standing over the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in armor. He struck his hand and said: 'Keep your hand away from the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, before, by Allah, [my sword] shall not reach you!' He said: 'Woe to you, how coarse and rude you are!' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled. He asked: 'Who is this, O Muḥammad?' He said: 'This is your nephew, al-Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah.' He said: 'O traitor! Did I not just yesterday wash away your disgrace?' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to him as he had spoken to his companions, informing him that he had not come seeking war. He rose from the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, having seen what his Companions did for him — they would not let him perform ablution without rushing to catch the water, nor spit without rushing to catch it, nor would a hair fall from him without them taking it. He returned to Quraysh and said: 'O people of Quraysh, I have visited Chosroes in his kingdom, Caesar and the Negus in their kingdoms, and by Allah I have never seen a king among his people like Muḥammad among his Companions. I have seen a people who would never abandon him for anything. Consider your position.' Before that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent Khirāsh ibn Umayyah al-Khuzāʿī to Makkah on a camel called al-Thaʿlab. When he entered Makkah, Quraysh hamstrung his camel and wanted to kill Khirāsh, but the Aḥābīsh prevented them. He then returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who called ʿUmar to send him to Makkah. ʿUmar said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I fear Quraysh for my life, and there is no one of Banū ʿAdī there to protect me. Quraysh knows my enmity toward them and my harshness against them. But let me point you to a man more honored among them than I — ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called ʿUthmān and sent him to Quraysh to inform them that he had not come for war but had come as a visitor to the House honoring its sanctity. ʿUthmān went to Makkah, where Abān ibn Saʿīd ibn al-ʿĀṣ met him, dismounted from his animal, carried him before him, rode behind him, and gave him protection until he delivered the message of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʿUthmān went to Abū Sufyān and the leaders of Quraysh and conveyed what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent him with. They said to ʿUthmān: 'If you wish to circumambulate the House, then do so.' He said: 'I shall not do so until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ circumambulates it.' Quraysh detained him, and the report reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Muslims that ʿUthmān had been killed. Muḥammad [Ibn Isḥāq] said: al-Zuhrī narrated to me that Quraysh then sent Suhayl ibn ʿAmr, saying: 'Go to Muḥammad and make peace with him, with the condition that he must return from us this year.' When the Prophet ﷺ saw him, he said: 'The people want peace, since they have sent this man.' They spoke at length and negotiated until a peace was agreed upon. When the matter was settled and nothing remained but the writing, ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb sprang up and went to Abū Bakr, saying: 'O Abū Bakr, is he not the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? Are we not Muslims? Are they not polytheists?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then why should we accept humiliation in our religion?' Abū Bakr said: 'O ʿUmar, hold fast to his stirrup wherever he goes, for I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.' ʿUmar said: 'And I bear witness.' Then he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said the same. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I shall never disobey His command, and He shall never forsake me.' ʿUmar later said: 'I never ceased fasting, giving charity, praying, and freeing slaves because of what I said that day, fearing [its consequences], until I hoped that it would turn out to be good.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib and said: 'Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.' Suhayl ibn ʿAmr said: 'I do not recognize this. Rather write: In Your name, O Allah.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him: 'Write: In Your name, O Allah. This is what Muḥammad the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has agreed upon with Suhayl ibn ʿAmr.' Suhayl said: 'If I had witnessed that you are the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, I would not have fought you. Rather write: This is what Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh and Suhayl ibn ʿAmr have agreed upon — to lay down war for ten years during which people shall be safe and refrain from [attacking] one another; that whoever comes to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from among his [Quraysh's] people without permission of his guardian shall be returned to them, and whoever comes to Quraysh from among those with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ shall not be returned; that between us there shall be a bound chest [of good faith] with no theft and no treachery.' Among the conditions when they wrote the document was that whoever wished to enter the covenant and pact of Muḥammad could do so, and whoever wished to enter the covenant and pact of Quraysh could do so. Khuzāʿah leapt up and said: 'We are with the covenant and pact of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ,' and Banū Bakr leapt up and said: 'We are with the covenant and pact of Quraysh.' [The conditions also stated:] 'You shall return from us this year and not enter Makkah upon us, but when the following year comes, we shall leave for you and you may enter with your Companions and stay three days, carrying only the weapons of a rider — you shall not enter with anything other than swords in their sheaths.' While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was writing the document, Abū Jandal ibn Suhayl ibn ʿAmr came in chains, having escaped to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When Suhayl saw Abū Jandal, he went to him, struck his face, and said: 'O Muḥammad, the agreement between me and you was concluded before this one came to you.' He said: 'You speak the truth.' Suhayl seized him by the collar, and Abū Jandal cried out at the top of his voice: 'O Muslims! Will you return me to the people of polytheism so they can persecute me in my religion?' This increased the people's distress. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'O Abū Jandal, be patient and seek reward, for Allah عز وجل will provide for you and those with you among the oppressed a way out and a relief. We have made a peace agreement between us and the people, giving them our word and they giving us theirs, and we shall not betray them.' ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb walked alongside Abū Jandal, saying: 'Be patient, Abū Jandal, for they are but polytheists, and the blood of any one of them is the blood of a dog.' He was bringing the hilt of his sword close to him, hoping he would take the sword and strike his father. But the man spared his father, and the matter was concluded. When they finished the document — and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had been praying in the sacred precinct while his camp was in the profane area — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and said: 'O people, sacrifice and shave [your heads].' No one stood up. He repeated it, and still no one moved, until he repeated it a third time and still no one moved. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned and entered upon Umm Salamah, saying: 'O Umm Salamah, what is the matter with the people?' She said: 'O Messenger of Allah, what you have seen has entered their hearts. Do not speak to any of them. Go to your sacrificial animals wherever they may be and sacrifice them and shave your head. Once you have done that, the people will do the same.' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out without speaking to anyone, went to his sacrificial animals and slaughtered them, then sat down and shaved his head. The people then began slaughtering and shaving. Then, while between Makkah and Madīnah in the middle of the road, Sūrah al-Fatḥ [Chapter 48] was revealed.
