English Translation

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād al-Makkī narrated to us, Abū Saʿīd — the freed slave of Banū Hāshim — narrated to us, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, from Umm Bakr and Jaʿfar, from ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Abī Rāfiʿ, from al-Miswar, who said: Ḥasan ibn Ḥasan sent word to al-Miswar proposing marriage to one of his daughters. Al-Miswar said to him: "Meet me at the ʿatamah (late night) prayer." He met him, and al-Miswar praised Allah, then said: "There is no tie of kinship, lineage, or marriage more beloved to me than your kinship and marriage ties. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Fāṭimah is an offshoot of me; what makes her happy makes me happy, and what grieves her grieves me. On the Day of Resurrection all ties of lineage and kinship will be severed except my lineage and my ties. Your wife is her daughter, and if I were to marry you [my daughter], it would grieve her.'" The man departed excusing him.
