حَدَّثَنَا بَهْزٌ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ أَخْبَرَنَا زَيْدُ بْنُ أَسْلَمَ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ لِصُهَيْبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا لَوْلَا ثَلَاثُ خِصَالٍ فِيكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ بِكَ بَأْسٌ قَالَ وَمَا هُنَّ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا نَرَاكَ
تَعِيبُ شَيْئًا قَالَ اكْتِنَاؤُكَ بِأَبِي يَحْيَى وَلَيْسَ لَكَ وَلَدٌ وَادِّعَاؤُكَ إِلَى النَّمِرِ بْنِ قَاسِطٍ وَأَنْتَ رَجُلٌ أَلْكَنُ وَأَنَّكَ لَا تُمْسِكُ الْمَالَ قَالَ أَمَّا اكْتِنَائِي بِأَبِي يَحْيَى فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَنَّانِي بِهَا فَلَا أَدَعُهَا حَتَّى أَلْقَاهُ وَأَمَّا ادِّعَائِي إِلَى النَّمِرِ بْنِ قَاسِطٍ فَإِنِّي امْرُؤٌ مِنْهُمْ وَلَكِنْ اسْتُرْضِعَ لِي بِالْأَيْلَةِ فَهَذِهِ اللُّكْنَةُ مِنْ ذَاكَ وَأَمَّا الْمَالُ فَهَلْ تُرَانِي أُنْفِقُ إِلَّا فِي حَقٍّ

English Translation
Bahz narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, Zayd ibn Aslam informed us, that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said to Ṣuhayb رضي الله عنهما: "Were it not for three traits in you, there would be nothing wrong with you." He said: "What are they? By Allah, we do not see you finding fault with anything." He said: "Your taking the kunyah Abū Yaḥyā when you have no son, your claiming lineage to al-Namir ibn Qāsiṭ when you are a man with a speech impediment, and your inability to hold onto wealth." He said: "As for my kunyah of Abū Yaḥyā — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me that kunyah, and I shall not abandon it until I meet him. As for my claiming lineage to al-Namir ibn Qāsiṭ — I am indeed a man of their lineage, but I was sent as a nursling to Aylah, and this speech impediment is from that. As for wealth — do you see me spending except in what is right?"
