حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ وَكَتَبَ بِهِ إِلَيَّ قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْحَارِثِ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ أَنَّ أَبَا مُوسَى الْغَافِقِيَّ سَمِعَ عُقْبَةَ بْنَ عَامِرٍ الْجُهَنِيَّ يُحَدِّثُ عَلَى الْمِنْبَرِ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَحَادِيثَ فَقَالَ أَبُو م
ُوسَى إِنَّ صَاحِبَكُمْ هَذَا لَحَافِظٌ أَوْ هَالِكٌ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ آخِرُ مَا عَهِدَ إِلَيْنَا أَنْ قَالَ عَلَيْكُمْ بِكِتَابِ اللَّهِ وَسَتَرْجِعُونَ إِلَى قَوْمٍ يُحِبُّونَ الْحَدِيثَ عَنِّي فَمَنْ قَالَ عَلَيَّ مَا لَمْ أَقُلْ فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنْ النَّارِ وَمَنْ حِفْظَ عَنِّي شَيْئًا فَلْيُحَدِّثْهُ

English Translation
Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd narrated to us — and Qutaybah wrote it to me — Layth ibn Saʿd narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn al-Ḥārith, from Yaḥyā ibn Maymūn al-Ḥaḍramī, that Abū Mūsā al-Ghāfiqī heard ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir al-Juhanī narrating on the pulpit about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — several hadiths. Abū Mūsā said: "This companion of yours is either a precise memorizer or doomed. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, among the last things he instructed us with, said: 'Hold fast to the Book of Allah, and you will return to a people who love narrating hadith from me. Whoever attributes to me what I did not say, let him take his seat in the Fire. And whoever memorizes something from me, let him narrate it.'"
