English Translation
ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, Jābir ibn Ṣubḥ narrated to us, he said: al-Muthannā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Khuzāʿī narrated to me — and I traveled with him to Wāsiṭ. He used to say the basmalah at the start of his food, and with his last morsel he would say: "In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end." I said to him: "You say the basmalah at the start of your eating. What about your saying at the end of your eating: 'In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end'?" He said: "Let me tell you about that. My grandfather Umayyah ibn Makhshī, who was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ, I heard him say: A man was eating while the Prophet ﷺ watched. He did not say the basmalah until his last morsel remained, then he said: 'In the name of Allah, at its beginning and its end.' the Prophet ﷺ said: 'The devil was eating with him until he said the basmalah. Then nothing remained in his stomach except that he vomited it.'"
