حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الْهَجَرِيِّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي أَوْفَى وَكَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الشَّجَرَةِ فَمَاتَتْ ابْنَةٌ لَهُ وَكَانَ يَتْبَعُ جِنَازَتَهَا عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ خَلْفَهَا فَجَعَلَ النِّسَاءُ يَبْكِينَ فَقَالَ لَا تَرْثِينَ فَإِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّ
ى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَهَى عَنْ الْمَرَاثِي فَتُفِيضُ إِحْدَاكُنَّ مِنْ عَبْرَتِهَا مَا شَاءَتْ ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ عَلَيْهَا أَرْبَعًا ثُمَّ قَامَ بَعْدَ الرَّابِعَةِ قَدْرَ مَا بَيْنَ التَّكْبِيرَتَيْنِ يَدْعُو ثُمَّ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصْنَعُ فِي الْجِنَازَةِ هَكَذَا

English Translation
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā narrated: When his daughter died, he followed her funeral procession riding on a mule. The women began to wail, so Ibn Abī Awfā said, 'Do not wail, for indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade eulogizing the dead (marāthī). Rather, let each of you shed whatever tears she wishes.' Then he pronounced four takbīrs over her, and after the fourth he stood for a period equal to the interval between two takbīrs, supplicating. Then he said, 'the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do this at funerals.'
