English Translation

Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that we stopped with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at a valley called Wādī Khumm. He ordered the prayer and prayed it in the midday heat. Then he addressed us, and a cloth was stretched over the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a samūrah tree to shade him from the sun. He said: 'Do you not know — or do you not bear witness — that I have more authority over every believer than he has over himself?' They said: 'Indeed.' He said: 'Whoever I am his mawlā, then ʿAlī is his mawlā. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, and be hostile to whoever is hostile to him.'
