حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَعْلَى بْنِ كَعْبٍ الثَّقَفِيَّ الطَّائِفِيَّ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَمْرَو بْنَ الشَّرِيدِ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ اسْتَنْشَدَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلّ
َى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ شِعْرِ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ أَبِي الصَّلْتِ فَأَنْشَدْتُهُ فَكُلَّمَا أَنْشَدْتُهُ بَيْتًا قَالَ هِيَ حَتَّى أَنْشَدْتُهُ مِائَةَ قَافِيَةٍ فَقَالَ إِنْ كَادَ لَيُسْلِمُ

English Translation
Al-Sharīd narrated from his father who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me to recite from the poetry of Umayyah ibn Abī al-Ṣalt. I recited to him, and every time I recited a verse he said: 'Go on' — until I recited a hundred verses for him. He said: 'He nearly accepted Islam.'
