English Translation
ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us, Maʿmar informed us, from Qatādah, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, who said: I was with the Prophet ﷺ — I think he said — in a garden, when a man came and greeted with salām. the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Go and give him permission and give him glad tidings of Paradise.' So I went, and it was Abū Bakr رضي الله تعالى عنه. I said: 'Enter, and receive glad tidings of Paradise.' He kept praising Allah عز وجل until he sat down. Then another came and greeted, and he said: 'Give him permission and give him glad tidings of Paradise.' So I went, and it was ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb رضي الله تعالى عنه. I said: 'Enter, and receive glad tidings of Paradise.' He kept praising Allah عز وجل until he sat down. Then another came and greeted, and he said: 'Give him permission and give him glad tidings of Paradise along with a severe trial.' So I went, and it was ʿUthmān. I said: 'Enter, and receive glad tidings of Paradise along with a severe trial.' He began saying: 'O Allah, grant patience!' until he sat down.
