حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ وَعَفَّانُ قَالَا ثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ قَالَ عَفَّانُ أَخْبَرَنِي عَمْرُو بْنُ مُرَّةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبَا وَائِلٍ قَالَ ثَنَا أَبُو مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيُّ أَنَّ أَعْرَابِيًّا أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ
عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ الرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِلْمَغْنَمِ وَالرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِيُذْكَرَ وَالرَّجُلُ يُقَاتِلُ لِيُرَى مَكَانُهُ فَمَنْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ قَاتَلَ لِتَكُونَ كَلِمَةُ اللَّهِ هِيَ الْعُلْيَا فَهُوَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

English Translation
Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar and ʿAffān narrated to us, both saying: Shuʿbah narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Murrah — ʿAffān said: ʿAmr ibn Murrah informed me — who said: I heard Abū Wāʾil say: Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī narrated to us that a bedouin came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, a man fights for war booty, a man fights to be remembered, and a man fights to show his position — who among them is in the path of Allah?' the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Whoever fights so that the word of Allah is supreme, he is in the path of Allah عز وجل.'
