English Translation

ʿAffān and Bahz narrated to us, both saying: Hammām narrated to us, Qatādah narrated to us, from Anas, that Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī narrated to him from the Prophet ﷺ who said: 'The parable of the believer who recites the Quran is like the citron — its taste is good and its fragrance is good. The parable of the believer who does not recite the Quran is like the date — its taste is good but it has no fragrance. The parable of the wicked person who recites the Quran is like sweet basil — its fragrance is good but its taste is bitter. And the parable of the wicked person who does not recite the Quran is like the colocynth — its taste is bitter and it has no fragrance.' ʿAffān narrated this to us again with the same wording.
