Hadith #572

English Translation

Ismāʿīl narrated to us, from Yūnus, from al-Ḥasan, that Asīd ibn al-Mutashammis said: We were returning with Abū Mūsā from Aṣbahān, and we hurried ahead. Then ʿUqaylah came, and Abū Mūsā said: 'Is there a young man who will help my daughter-in-law dismount?' — meaning a slave woman of al-Ashʿarī. I said: 'Yes.' So I helped her dismount near a tree, then I came and sat with the people. He said: 'Shall I not narrate to you a hadith that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to tell us?' We said: 'Yes, may Allah have mercy on you.' He said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to tell us that before the Hour there will be al-harj. They said: 'What is al-harj?' He said: 'Lying and killing.' They said: 'More than what we kill now?' He said: 'It is not your killing of the disbelievers, but rather your killing of one another — until a man kills his neighbor, kills his brother, kills his uncle, and kills his cousin.' They said: 'Glory be to Allah! While we still have our minds?' He said: 'No, rather the minds of the people of that time will be taken away until one of you will think he is upon something when he is upon nothing. By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, I fear that those affairs will reach me and you, and I find no way out for me and you except what our Prophet ﷺ instructed us: to come out of it as we entered it, not having instigated anything in it.' Ismāʿīl narrated to us, Ayyūb narrated to us, from al-Qāsim al-Tamīmī, from Zahdam al-Jarmī, who said: We were with Abū Mūsā, and he presented his food — then he mentioned the like of Zahdam's hadith. Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Abū Qilābah, from Zahdam al-Jarmī — Ayyūb said: and al-Qāsim al-Kalbī also narrated it to me, from Zahdam, and he said: I am better at memorizing al-Qāsim's narration — who said: We were with Abū Mūsā, and he presented his food — then he mentioned the like of Zahdam's hadith. Sulaymān ibn Ḥarb narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Abū Qilābah, from Zahdam al-Jarmī — Ayyūb said: and al-Qāsim al-Kalbī narrated it to me, from Zahdam, and he said: I am better at memorizing al-Qāsim's narration — who said: We were with Abū Mūsā, and he called for his table and it was brought with chicken meat on it — then he mentioned the hadith.
