English Translation

Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, from ʿUthmān ibn Ghiyāth, Abū ʿUthmān narrated to us, from Abū Mūsā, that he was with the Prophet ﷺ in a garden, and in the Prophet ﷺ's ﷺ hand was a stick with which he was poking between the water and the mud. A man came seeking to enter. He said: 'Open for him and give him glad tidings of Paradise.' It was Abū Bakr رضي الله تعالى عنه. So I opened for him and gave him glad tidings of Paradise. Then another man came seeking to enter. He said: 'Open for him and give him glad tidings of Paradise.' It was ʿUmar رضي الله تعالى عنه. So I opened for him and gave him glad tidings of Paradise. Then another man came seeking to enter. He said: 'Open for him and give him glad tidings of Paradise, along with a trial that will befall him — or a tribulation that will come.' It was ʿUthmān رضي الله تعالى عنه. So I opened for him, gave him glad tidings of Paradise, and informed him. He said: 'Allah is the One whose help is sought.' Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, ʿUthmān — meaning Ibn Ghiyāth — narrated to us, from Abū ʿUthmān, from Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī, who said: I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in one of the gardens of Madinah — then he mentioned the meaning of Yaḥyā's hadith, except that he mentioned in ʿUthmān's رضي الله تعالى عنه words: 'Allah is the One whose help is sought. O Allah, grant me patience, and upon Allah is reliance.'
