Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, Hishām narrated to us, Qatādah narrated to us, from Yūnus ibn Jubayr, from Ḥiṭṭān ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Raqāshī, that al-Ashʿarī led his companions in prayer. A man from the people said while he was sitting in his prayer: 'The prayer has been established with righteousness and zakāh.' When al-Ashʿarī finished his prayer, he turned to the people and said: 'Which of you said such and such a statement?' The people fell silent. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: My father said 'aramma' means silence. He said: 'Perhaps you, O Ḥiṭṭān, said it' — to Ḥiṭṭān ibn ʿAbd Allāh. He said: 'By Allah, I did not say it, and I feared you would rebuke me for it.' A man from the people said: 'I said it, and I only intended good by it.' Al-Ashʿarī said: 'Do you not know what to say in your prayers? the Prophet ﷺ of Allah ﷺ addressed us, taught us our Sunnah, and explained our prayer to us. He said: Straighten your rows, then let the best reciter among you lead you. When he says the takbīr, say the takbīr. When he recites {nor of those who went astray}, say Āmīn and Allah will answer you. When the imām says the takbīr and bows, say the takbīr and bow, for the imām bows before you and raises before you. the Prophet ﷺ of Allah ﷺ said: So that compensates for that. When he says: Samiʿa Allāhu li-man ḥamidah, say: Allāhumma Rabbanā laka al-ḥamd, and Allah will hear you, for Allah عز وجل said upon the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ: Samiʿa Allāhu li-man ḥamidah. When the imām says the takbīr and prostrates, say the takbīr and prostrate, for the imām prostrates before you and raises before you. the Prophet ﷺ of Allah ﷺ said: So that compensates for that. And when you are at the sitting, let the first thing each of you says be: al-Taḥiyyātu al-ṭayyibātu al-ṣalawātu lillāh, al-salāmu ʿalayka ayyuhā al-nabiyyu wa raḥmatu Allāhi wa barakātuh, al-salāmu ʿalaynā wa ʿalā ʿibād Allāh al-ṣāliḥīn, ashhadu an lā ilāha illā Allāh wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa rasūluh.'
