English Translation
Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Anas, from Abū Mūsā, from the Prophet ﷺ who said: 'The parable of the believer who recites the Quran is like the citron — its taste is good and its fragrance is good. The parable of the believer who does not recite the Quran is like the date — its taste is good but it has no fragrance. The parable of the hypocrite who recites the Quran is like sweet basil — its fragrance is good but it has no taste.' Yaḥyā once said: 'its taste is bitter.' 'And the parable of the hypocrite who does not recite the Quran is like the colocynth — it has no fragrance and its taste is foul.'
