English Translation
Ismāʿīl — he is Ibn Ibrāhīm — narrated to us, Abū Ḥayyān narrated to us who said: I heard a shaykh in Madinah narrating that ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā رضي الله عنه wrote to ʿUbayd Allāh when he intended to march against the Ḥarūriyyah. I said to his scribe — who was a friend of mine — 'Copy it for me,' and he did. It said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say, 'Do not wish to meet the enemy, and ask Allah عز وجل for wellbeing. But if you do meet them, then be patient, and know that Paradise is beneath the shade of the swords.' He would look, and when the sun had passed the zenith, he would advance upon his enemy. Then he said, 'O Allah, Revealer of the Book, Mover of the clouds, Defeater of the Confederates, defeat them and grant us victory over them.'
