Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us, Shuʿbah narrated to us — and Ḥajjāj said: Shuʿbah narrated to me — who said: I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī al-Mujālid say: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Shaddād and Abū Burdah disagreed regarding forward payment (salam), so they sent me to ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Awfā رضي الله عنه. I asked him and he said, 'We used to make forward payments during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and of Abū Bakr, and of ʿUmar رضي الله تعالى عنه, in wheat, barley, and raisins — or dates, he was uncertain about dates and raisins — and it was not something they had in hand — or as far as we could see they did not have it in hand.' Then I went to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abzā and he said the same.
