English Translation

Yahyā narrated to us, from Hishām: Qatādah narrated to us, from al-Hasan, from ‘Imrān ibn Husayn, that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said — while on one of his journeys, with his companions spread apart on the road — he raised his voice with these two verses: O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the earthquake of the Hour is a terrible thing. On the Day you see it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling — until the end of the two verses. When his companions heard that, they spurred their mounts, knowing that he was about to say something. When they gathered around him, he said: Do you know what Day that is? That is the Day when Ādam shall be called, and his Lord — blessed and exalted is He — shall say: O Ādam, send forth the contingent of the Fire. He will ask: O my Lord, what is the contingent of the Fire? He will say: From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine to the Fire and one to Paradise. His companions fell into such despair that they did not even show a smile. When the Prophet ﷺ saw this, he said: Work and be glad! By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, you are with two creations that have never been with anything except they outnumbered it: Ya’jūj and Ma’jūj, and those who perished from the children of Ādam and the children of Iblīs. Their distress was lifted. Then he said: Work and be glad! By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, you are among mankind only like the mark on the side of a camel, or the small spot on the foreleg of an animal. Rawh narrated to us: Sa‘īd and Hishām ibn Abī Abdillāh narrated it with the same meaning, except he said: Their distress was relieved. And he said: except they outnumbered it.
