حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ وَعَفَّانُ الْمَعْنَى وَهَذَا حَدِيثُ عَبْدِ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَا ثَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ الرِّشْكُ عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ قَالَ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سَرِيَّةً وَأَمَّرَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ فَأَحْدَثَ شَيْئًا فِي سَفَرِهِ فَتَعَاهَدَ قَالَ عَفَّانُ فَتَعَاقَدَ أَرْبَعَةٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنْ يَذْكُرُوا أَمْرَهُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ عِمْرَانُ وَكُنَّا إِذَا قَدِمْنَا مِنْ سَفَرٍ بَدَأْنَا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَلَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِ قَالَ فَدَخَلُوا ع
َلَيْهِ فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عَلِيًّا فَعَلَ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ الثَّانِي فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عَلِيًّا فَعَلَ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ الثَّالِثُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عَلِيًّا فَعَلَ كَذَا وَكَذَا فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ قَامَ الرَّابِعُ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّ عَلِيًّا فَعَلَ كَذَا وَكَذَا قَالَ فَأَقْبَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى الرَّابِعِ وَقَدْ تَغَيَّرَ وَجْهُهُ فَقَالَ دَعُوا عَلِيًّا دَعُوا عَلِيًّا إِنَّ عَلِيًّا مِنِّي وَأَنَا مِنْهُ وَهُوَ وَلِيُّ كُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ بَعْدِي

English Translation
ʿAbd al-Razzāq and ʿAffān narrated to us — the meaning is the same, and this is the hadith of ʿAbd al-Razzāq — they said: Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, he said: Yazīd al-Rishk narrated to me, from Muṭarrif ibn ʿAbd Allāh, from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn, who said: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent an expedition and appointed ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib رضي الله تعالى عنه as their commander. He did something during his journey, and four of the Companions of Muḥammad ﷺ agreed — ʿAffān said: made a pact — to mention his matter to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. ʿImrān said: When we returned from a journey, we would begin by visiting the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and greeting him. They entered upon him, and a man among them stood and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, ʿAlī did such and such.’ He turned away from him. Then the second stood and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, ʿAlī did such and such.’ He turned away from him. Then the third stood and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, ʿAlī did such and such.’ He turned away from him. Then the fourth stood and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, ʿAlī did such and such.’ the Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to the fourth, and his face had changed, and he said: ‘Leave ʿAlī alone! Leave ʿAlī alone! Indeed, ʿAlī is from me and I am from him, and he is the ally of every believer after me.’
