حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ يَعْنِي الشَّافِعِيَّ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زَيْدِ بْنِ جُدْعَانَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ قَالَ أَنْشُدُ اللَّهَ رَجُلًا سَمِعَ مِنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى
اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْجَدِّ شَيْئًا فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ شَهِدْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَعْطَاهُ الثُّلُثَ قَالَ مَعَ مَنْ قَالَ لَا أَدْرِي قَالَ لَا دَرَيْتَ

English Translation
Muḥammad ibn Idrīs — meaning al-Shāfiʿī — narrated to us, Sufyān informed us, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān, from al-Ḥasan, from ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn, that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb said: ‘I adjure by Allah any man who heard something from the Prophet ﷺ regarding the grandfather (in inheritance).’ A man stood and said: ‘I witnessed the Prophet ﷺ give him one-third.’ He said: ‘With whom (i.e., alongside which heirs)?’ He said: ‘I do not know.’ He said: ‘You do not know? Then it is of no use.’
