Chain of Narration (Isnad)

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ عِيسَى حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ زَيْدٍ عَنْ إِسْحَاقَ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ الْعَدَوِيِّ قَالَ دَخَلْنَا عَلَى عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ فِي رَهْطٍ مِنْ بَنِي عَدِيٍّ فِينَا بُشَيْرُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ فَحَدَّثَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْحَيَاءُ خَيْرٌ كُلُّهُ أَوْ إِنَّ الْحَيَاءَ خَيْرٌ كُلُّهُ فَقَالَ بُشَيْرُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ إِنَّا لَنَجِدُ فِي بَعْضِ الْكُتُبِ أَوْ قَالَ الْحِكْم

َةِ أَنَّ مِنْهُ سَكِينَةً وَوَقَارًا لَلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَمِنْهُ ضَعْفًا فَأَعَادَ عِمْرَانُ الْحَدِيثَ وَأَعَادَ بُشَيْرٌ مَقَالَتَهُ حَتَّى ذَكَر ذَاكَ مَرَّتَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثًا فَغَضِبَ عِمْرَانُ حَتَّى احْمَرَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ وَقَالَ أُحَدِّثُكَ عَنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَتَعْرِضُ فِيهِ لِحَدِيثِ الْكُتُبِ قَالَ فَقُلْنَا يَا أَبَا نُجَيْدٍ إِنَّهُ لَا بَأْسَ بِهِ وَإِنَّهُ مِنَّا فَمَا زِلْنَا حَتَّى سَكَنَ

English Translation

Isḥāq ibn ʿIsā narrated to us, Ḥammād — meaning Ibn Zayd — narrated to us, from Isḥāq ibn Suwayd, from Abū Qatādah al-ʿAdawī, who said: We entered upon ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn in a group from Banū ʿAdī, among us Bushayr ibn Kaʿb. ʿImrān ibn Ḥuṣayn narrated to us: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Modesty is entirely good.” — or: “Modesty is entirely good.” Bushayr ibn Kaʿb said: ‘We find in some of the books’ — or he said: ‘in the wisdom literature’ — ‘that some of it is tranquility and dignity for Allah عز وجل, and some of it is weakness.’ ʿImrān repeated the hadith and Bushayr repeated his statement two or three times. Then ʿImrān became so angry that his eyes turned red, and he said: ‘I narrate to you from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and you counter it with hadith from books!’ We said: ‘O Abū Nujayd, there is no harm in him, he is one of us.’ And we kept at him until he calmed down.
