حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو قَزَعَةَ سُوَيْدُ بْنُ حُجَيْرٍ الْبَاهِلِيُّ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ مُعَاوِيَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّ أَخَاهُ مَالِكًا قَالَ يَا مُعَاوِيَةُ إِنَّ مُحَمَّدًا أَخَذَ جِيرَانِي فَانْطَلِقْ إِلَيْهِ فَإِنَّهُ قَدْ عَرَفَكَ وَكَلَّمَكَ قَالَ فَانْطَلَقْتُ مَعَهُ فَقَالَ دَعْ لِي جِيرَانِي فَإِنَّهُمْ قَدْ كَانُوا أَسْلَمُوا فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ فَقَامَ مُتَمَعِّطًا فَقَالَ أَمْ وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ فَعَلْتَ إِنّ
َ النَّاسَ لَيَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّكَ تَأْمُرُ بِالْأَمْرِ وَتَخْلُفُ إِلَى غَيْرِهِ وَجَعَلْتُ أَجُرُّهُ وَهُوَ يَتَكَلَّمُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا تَقُولُ فَقَالُوا إِنَّكَ وَاللَّهِ لَئِنْ فَعَلْتَ ذَلِكَ إِنَّ النَّاسَ لَيَزْعُمُونَ أَنَّكَ لَتَأْمُرُ بِالْأَمْرِ وَتُخَالِفُ إِلَى غَيْرِهِ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَوَ قَدْ قَالُوهَا أَوْ قَائِلُهُمْ فَلَئِنْ فَعَلْتُ ذَاكَ وَمَا ذَاكَ إِلَّا عَلَيَّ وَمَا عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ أَرْسِلُوا لَهُ جِيرَانَهُ

English Translation
ʿAffān narrated to us, Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, Abū Qazaʿah Suwayd ibn Ḥujayr al-Bāhilī informed us, from Ḥakīm ibn Muʿāwiyah, from his father, that his brother Mālik said: ‘O Muʿāwiyah, Muḥammad has taken my neighbors captive. Go to him, for he knows you and has spoken with you.’ He said: ‘So I went with him and said: "Release my brother’s neighbors, for they had already accepted Islam."’ He turned away from him. He stood up angrily and said: ‘By Allah, if you do this, people claim that you command one thing and do the opposite.’ I kept pulling him while he was speaking. the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘What is he saying?’ They said: ‘By Allah, if you do that, people claim that you command one thing and go against it.’ He said: ‘They have said that? If I did that, the harm is only upon me and not upon them at all. Release his neighbors for him.’
