Hadith #328

English Translation

Ismā‘īl narrated to us, Bahz ibn Ḥakīm informed us, from his father, from his grandfather, that his father — or his uncle — stood before the Prophet ﷺ and said: ‘My neighbors — for what reason were they seized?’ But he turned away from him. Then he said: ‘Tell me, for what reason were they seized?’ But he turned away from him. So he said: ‘If I say that, they indeed claim that you forbid evil yet indulge in it privately.’ the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘What did he say?’ Then his brother — or his nephew — stood up and said: ‘O Messenger of Allāh, he indeed said it.’ So [the Prophet ﷺ] said: ‘You have indeed said it — or the one among you who said it — and even if I were to do that, it would be against me and not against you. Release his neighbors to him.’”
