English Translation

Yaḥyā ibn Sa‘īd and Ismā‘īl ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us, from Bahz, who said: My father narrated to me, from my grandfather, who said: I said: ‘O Messenger of Allāh, our nakedness (‘awrah) — what may we expose of it and what must we guard?’ He said: ‘Guard your nakedness except from your wife or what your right hand possesses.’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allāh, what about when people are among one another?’ He said: ‘If you can ensure that no one sees it, then let no one see it.’ I said: ‘What about when one of us is alone?’ He said: ‘Allāh tabāraka wa ta‘ālā is more deserving of one’s modesty than people’ — and he placed his hand on his private part. ‘Abd al-Razzāq narrated to us, Ma‘mar narrated to us, from Bahz, and he mentioned the like of it, saying: ‘Allāh ‘azza wa jall is more deserving of one’s modesty.’ Yūnus narrated to us, from Ḥammād ibn Zayd, who also said: And the Prophet ﷺ [gestured] with his hand, placing it on his private part.
