Hadith #350

English Translation

Ismā‘īl narrated to us, Bahz ibn Ḥakīm informed us, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ when I came to him and said: ‘By Allāh, I did not come to you until I swore more than the number of those that I would not come to you nor come to your religion’ — and Bahz clasped his hands together — ‘and I have come as a man who understands nothing except what Allāh tabāraka wa ta‘ālā and His Messenger have taught me. I ask you by the face of Allāh: with what did Allāh send you to us?’ He said: ‘With Islam.’ I said: ‘And what are the signs of Islam?’ He said: ‘That you say: I have submitted my face to Allāh and freed myself [of all else], and that you establish the prayer and give the zakāh. Every Muslim is sacred to every other Muslim — two brothers who support one another. Allāh does not accept from a polytheist who associates partners after having accepted Islam any deed, and that you part from the polytheists and join the Muslims. Why do I hold you by your waistbands from the Fire? Verily my Lord ‘azza wa jall is calling me, and He will ask me: Have you conveyed to His servants? And I shall say: My Lord, I have indeed conveyed to them. So let those present among you convey to those absent. Then you shall be summoned with muzzles upon your mouths, and the first thing that will testify from any of you is his thigh and his palm.’ I said: ‘O Prophet of Allāh, is this our religion?’ He said: ‘This is your religion, and wherever you do good, it will suffice you.’”
