English Translation
Ismā‘īl narrated to us, Bahz ibn Ḥakīm ibn Mu‘āwiyah narrated to us, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ of Allāh ﷺ saying: “There was a servant among the servants of Allāh jalla wa ‘azz whom Allāh had given wealth and children, but he did not practice the religion of Allāh tabāraka wa ta‘ālā at all. He remained until a lifetime passed — or a lifetime remained — then he reflected and realized that he had stored no good with Allāh tabāraka wa ta‘ālā. He called his sons and said: What kind of father do you know me to be? They said: The best, O our father. He said: By Allāh, I shall not leave any wealth with any one of you that came from me without taking it back, or you will do as I command you. He took a covenant from them — by my Lord — and said: As for this, when I die, cast me into the fire until I become charcoal, then crush me.” He said: It is as if I can see the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ as he was saying with his hand on his thigh: “Then scatter me in the wind, so that I might escape Allāh tabāraka wa ta‘ālā.” He said: They did that to him, by the Lord of Muḥammad, when he died. He was brought in the most complete form he had ever been, and was presented before his Lord tabāraka wa ta‘ālā, Who said: ‘What drove you to [order] the fire?’ He said: ‘My fear of You, O my Lord.’ He said: ‘I surely hear you are fearful,’ and he was forgiven.”
