English Translation

Ḥasan ibn Mūsā narrated to us, Shaybān ibn ‘Abd al-Raḥmān narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Malik, from Zayd ibn ‘Uqbah al-Fazārī, who said: I entered upon al-Ḥajjāj ibn Yūsuf and said: ‘May Allāh set the governor right. Shall I not tell you a hadith that Samurah ibn Jundub narrated to me from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ He said: I heard him say: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Asking [for money] is a scraping by which a man scrapes his own face. Whoever wishes may preserve his face, and whoever wishes may leave it — unless a man asks a ruler, or asks for something he absolutely needs.”
