English Translation

Abū Kāmil narrated to us, Zuhayr narrated to us, al-Aswad ibn Qays narrated to us, Tha‘labah ibn ‘Abbād al-‘Abdī of the people of Baṣrah narrated to us, who said: I attended a sermon of Samurah ibn Jundub one day, and he mentioned in his sermon a ḥadīth from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: While a youth from the Anṣār and I were shooting arrows at our targets during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the sun was about two or three spear-lengths above the horizon in the eye of the beholder, when it turned black until it became like a date-palm sapling (dark disc). One of us said to the other: Let us go to the mosque, for by Allah, something is happening with this sun that will be a momentous matter for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning his community. So we went to the mosque, and he (the Prophet ﷺ) had come out. He stepped forward and led us in what was the longest standing in prayer we had ever seen, during which we could hear no sound from him. Then he bowed in the longest bow we had ever seen, with no sound heard from him. Then he did the same in the second rak‘ah. The sun became clear at the moment he was sitting in the second rak‘ah. Zuhayr said: I believe he then gave salām. He praised Allah and extolled Him, testified that he is the slave of Allah and His Messenger, then said: ‘O people! I adjure you by Allah — if you know that I have fallen short in conveying any of my Lord’s messages, tell me and I will convey them as they deserve to be conveyed. And if you know that I have conveyed my Lord’s messages, then tell me that.’ Men stood and said: We bear witness that you have conveyed the messages of your Lord, given sincere counsel to your community, and fulfilled what was upon you. Then they were silent. He said: ‘And now — there are men who claim that the eclipse of this sun and the eclipse of this moon, and the shifting of these stars from their rising points, occur because of the death of great men on earth. They have lied. Rather, they are signs from the signs of Allah تبارك وتعالى, by which He tests His servants to see who among them will be moved to repentance. By Allah, since I stood to pray, I have seen what you are going to face in your worldly and afterlife affairs. By Allah, the Hour will not come until thirty liars have emerged, the last of them being the one-eyed Dajjāl, whose left eye is wiped flat — as if it were the eye of Abū Yaḥyā — (pointing to) an old man of the Anṣār who was between him and the chamber of ‘Ā’ishah رضي الله تعالى عنها. When he emerges — or as he said — whenever he emerges, he will claim to be God. Whoever believes in him, affirms him, and follows him — no good deed he has previously done will benefit him. And whoever disbelieves in him and rejects him will not be punished for any evil deed he has previously done. He will dominate the entire earth except the Ḥaram and Bayt al-Maqdis. He will besiege the believers in Bayt al-Maqdis and they will be shaken with a severe shaking, then Allah تبارك وتعالى will destroy him and his armies — until even the trunk of a wall — or the root of a tree — will call out: O believer! — or O Muslim! — Here is a Jew! — or Here is an unbeliever! — come and kill him! But that will not come to pass until you witness matters so grave they will weigh heavily upon your hearts, and you will ask one another: Did your Prophet mention any of this to you? And until mountains are moved from their places — and then after that comes the Seizure.’ Tha‘labah said: Then I attended another sermon of Samurah in which he mentioned this ḥadīth, and he did not advance or delay a single word from its place.
