حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ الْهَيْثَمِ أَبُو قَطَنٍ حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ شَهِدَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ وَقَدْ كَانَ جَمَعَ أَصْحَابَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي حَيَاتِهِ وَصِحَّتِهِ فَنَاشَدَهُمْ اللَّهَ مَنْ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَكَرَ
فِي الْجَدِّ شَيْئًا فَقَامَ مَعْقِلُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ قَدْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أُتِيَ بِفَرِيضَةٍ فِيهَا جَدٌّ فَأَعْطَاهُ ثُلُثًا أَوْ سُدُسًا قَالَ وَمَا الْفَرِيضَةُ قَالَ لَا أَدْرِي قَالَ مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تَدْرِيَ

English Translation
It was narrated from ʿAmr ibn Maymūn who witnessed ʿUmar رضي الله عنه — who had gathered the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ during his lifetime and health — adjure them: “I call upon whoever heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention anything concerning the grandfather [in inheritance] to speak.” Maʿqil ibn Yassār رضي الله عنه stood up and said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — an estate (farīḍah) was brought before him in which there was a grandfather, and he gave him a third or a sixth.” He [ʿUmar] said: “What was the estate?” He said: “I do not know.” He said: “What prevented you from knowing?” [In another version: He said: “You don’t know? Then what use are you?”]
