Chain of Narration (Isnad)

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنِ الْحَسَنِ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ سَأَلَ عَنْ فَرِيضَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي الْجَدِّ فَقَامَ مَعْقِلُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ الْمُزَن

ِيُّ فَقَالَ قَضَى فِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ مَاذَا قَالَ السُّدُسَ قَالَ مَعَ مَنْ قَالَ لَا أَدْرِي قَالَ لَا دَرَيْتَ فَمَا تُغْنِي إِذًا

English Translation

It was narrated from al-Ḥasan that ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb asked about the ordinance of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning the grandfather [in inheritance]. Maʿqil ibn Yassār al-Muzani stood up and said: “the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ruled concerning it.” He [ʿUmar] said: “What?” He said: “The sixth.” He said: “Alongside whom?” He said: “I do not know.” He said: “You don’t know? Then what use are you?”
