Hadith #597

English Translation

It was narrated from Abū al-Salīl who said: Mujībah, an elderly woman from Bāhilah, narrated to me from her father — or her uncle — who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for some need once. Then I came again the following year and my body, color, and appearance had changed. He said: “Who are you?” I said: “Do you not recognize me?” He said: “And who are you?” I said: “I am al-Bāhilī who came to you in the first year.” He said: “For you came to me with your body, color, and appearance fine — what has brought you to this state?” I said: “By Allah, I have not broken my fast since [I left] you except at night.” He said: “Who commanded you to torture yourself? Who commanded you to torture yourself? Who commanded you to torture yourself?” [repeating it three times]. “Fast the month of patience — Ramaḍān.” I said: “I find strength in myself and I wish you would increase me.” He said: “Then fast one day from each month.” I said: “I find strength and I wish you would increase me.” He said: “Then two days from each month.” I said: “I find strength and I wish you would increase me.” He [hesitated — it seemed he was reluctant for the third time]. I said: “I find strength and I wish you would increase me.” He said: “Then fast from the sacred months (al-Ḥurum) and break fast.”
