Hadith #280
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَاهُ وُهَيْبٌ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ الْحَذَّاءُ عَنْ أَبِي تَمِيمَةَ الْهُجَيْمِيِّ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ بَلْهُجَيْمٍ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِلَامَ تَدْعُو قَالَ أَدْعُو إِلَى اللَّهِ وَحْدَهُ الَّذِي إِنْ مَسَّكَ ضُرٌّ
فَدَعَوْتَهُ كَشَفَ عَنْكَ وَالَّذِي إِنْ ضَلَلْتَ بِأَرْضٍ قَفْرٍ دَعَوْتَهُ رَدَّ عَلَيْكَ وَالَّذِي إِنْ أَصَابَتْكَ سَنَةٌ فَدَعَوْتَهُ أَنْبَتَ عَلَيْكَ قَالَ قُلْتُ فَأَوْصِنِي قَالَ لَا تَسُبَّنَّ أَحَدًا وَلَا تَزْهَدَنَّ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ وَلَوْ أَنْ تَلْقَى أَخَاكَ وَأَنْتَ مُنْبَسِطٌ إِلَيْهِ وَجْهُكَ وَلَوْ أَنْ تُفْرِغَ مِنْ دَلْوِكَ فِي إِنَاءِ الْمُسْتَسْقِي وَاتَّزِرْ إِلَى نِصْفِ السَّاقِ فَإِنْ أَبَيْتَ فَإِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ وَإِيَّاكَ وَإِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ فَإِنَّ إِسْبَالَ الْإِزَارِ مِنْ الْمَخِيلَةِ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى لَا يُحِبُّ الْمَخِيلَةَ

English Translation
It was narrated from a man of the Banu Hujaym tribe (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'O Messenger of Allah, to what do you call?' He said: 'I call to Allah alone — the One who if harm befalls you and you call upon Him, He will remove it from you; the One who if you are lost in a barren land and call upon Him, He will guide you back; the One who if drought strikes you and you call upon Him, He will cause provision to grow for you.' He said: 'Advise me.' He said: 'Do not revile anyone, do not disdain any act of goodness even if it is meeting your brother with a cheerful face, even if it is pouring from your bucket into the vessel of one seeking water. Wear your lower garment to mid-shin, and if you refuse, then to the ankles. Beware of dragging the lower garment, for dragging the lower garment is from arrogance, and Allah does not love arrogance.'
