Hadith #360

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ عَنْ خَالِدٍ الْحَذَّاءِ عَنْ أَبِي الْمَلِيحِ بْنِ أُسَامَةَ عَنْ نُبَيْشَةَ الْهُذَلِيِّ قَالَ قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَعْتِرُ عَتِيرَةً فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا قَالَ اذْبَحُوا لِلَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فِي أَيِّ شَهْرٍ مَا كَانَ وَبَرُّوا اللَّهَ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى وَأَطْعِمُوا قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا كُنَّا نُفَرِّعُ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ فَرَعًا فَمَا تَأْمُرُنَا قَالَ فِي كُلِّ سَائِمَةٍ فَرَعٌ تَغْذُوهُ مَاشِيَتُكَ حَتَّى إِذَا اسْتَحْمَلَ ذَبَحْتَهُ فَتَصَدَّقْتَ بِلَحْمِهِ قَالَ خَالِدٌ أُرَاهُ قَالَ عَلَى ابْنِ السَّبِيلِ
فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ هُوَ خَيْرٌ قَالَ وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّا كُنَّا نَهَيْنَاكُمْ أَنْ تَأْكُلُوا لُحُومَهَا فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ كَيْ تَسَعَكُمْ فَقَدْ جَاءَ اللَّهُ بِالسَّعَةِ فَكُلُوا وَادَّخِرُوا وَاتَّجِرُوا أَلَا وَإِنَّ هَذِهِ الْأَيَّامَ أَيَّامُ أَكْلٍ وَشُرْبٍ وَذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى قَالَ خَالِدٌ قُلْتُ لِأَبِي قِلَابَةَ كَمْ السَّائِمَةُ قَالَ مِائَةٌ

English Translation
It was narrated from Nubaysha al-Hudhali (may Allah be pleased with him) that people said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we used to perform the 'atira sacrifice in the pre-Islamic period. What do you command us?' He said: 'Slaughter for Allah, Exalted be He, in whatever month it may be, do good for the sake of Allah, and feed others.' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we also used to perform the fara' (sacrifice of the first-born camel). What do you command us?' He said: 'In every fara' there is a right — feed it until it is grown, then slaughter it and give its meat in charity.'
