English Translation
It was narrated from Umm 'Atiyya al-Ansariyya (may Allah be pleased with her) that when the verse was revealed — 'that they pledge allegiance to you that they will not associate anything with Allah... and that they will not disobey you in what is right' — wailing in mourning was among the things forbidden. She said: 'I said: O Messenger of Allah, except the family of so-and-so, for they helped me in the pre-Islamic period and I must reciprocate.' He said: 'Except the family of so-and-so.'
