حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ عَنْ عَقِيلِ بْنِ طَلْحَةَ عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ هَيْضَمٍ عَنِ الْأَشْعَثِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ قَالَ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي وَفْدٍ لَا يَرَوْنَ إِلّ
َا أَنِّي أَفْضَلُهُمْ فَقُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّا نَزْعُمُ أَنَّكُمْ مِنَّا قَالَ نَحْنُ بَنُو النَّضْرِ بْنُ كِنَانَةَ لَا نَقْفُو أُمَّنَا وَلَا نَنْتَفِي مِنْ أَبِينَا قَالَ فَكَانَ الْأَشْعَثُ يَقُولُ لَا أُوتَى بِرَجُلٍ نَفَى قُرَيْشًا مِنْ النَّضْرِ بْنِ كِنَانَةَ إِلَّا جَلَدْتُهُ الْحَدَّ

English Translation
It was narrated from al-Ash'ath ibn Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: 'I came to the Messenger of Allah ß as part of a delegation — they thought I was the best of them. I had braided hair and gold rings on my fingers. The Messenger of Allah ß said: "O Ash'ath, get rid of what I see on you of the adornment of this world, for you are coming to Allah."'
