Hadith #163
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ أَبِي الْجَعْدِ عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ قَالَ لَمَّا نَزَلَ فِي الْفِضَّةِ وَالذَّهَبِ مَا نَزَلَ قَالُوا فَأَيَّ الْمَالِ نَتَّخِذُ قَالَ
عُمَرُ أَنَا أَعْلَمُ ذَلِكَ لَكُمْ قَالَ فَأَوْضَعَ عَلَى بَعِيرٍ فَأَدْرَكَهُ وَأَنَا فِي أَثَرِهِ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَيَّ الْمَالِ نَتَّخِذُ قَالَ لِيَتَّخِذْ أَحَدُكُمْ قَلْبًا شَاكِرًا وَلِسَانًا ذَاكِرًا وَزَوْجَةً تُعِينُهُ عَلَى أَمْرِ الْآخِرَةِ

English Translation
It was narrated from Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the verse about silver and gold was revealed, they said: 'What wealth should we then acquire?' 'Umar said: 'I will find that out for you.' He rode swiftly on his camel and caught up with the Prophet ﷺ while I followed behind him. He asked: 'O Messenger of Allah, what wealth should we acquire?' He ﷺ said: 'Let each of you acquire a grateful heart, a tongue that remembers Allah, and a righteous wife who helps him in the affairs of the Hereafter.'
