حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَوْهَبٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ تُوُفِّيَ رَجُلٌ مِنَّا فَأَتَيْنَا النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِيُصَلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ هَلْ تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ قَالُوا لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا تَرَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ قَالَ فَهَلْ تَرَكَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ دَيْنٍ قَالُوا نَعَمْ ثَمَانِيَةَ عَشَرَ دِرْهَمًا قَالَ فَهَلْ تَرَكَ لَهَا قَضَاءً قَالُ
وا لَا وَاللَّهِ مَا تَرَكَ لَهَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ قَالَ فَصَلُّوا أَنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قَضَيْتُ عَنْهُ أَتُصَلِّي عَلَيْهِ قَالَ إِنْ قَضَيْتَ عَنْهُ بِالْوَفَاءِ صَلَّيْتُ عَلَيْهِ قَالَ فَذَهَبَ أَبُو قَتَادَةَ فَقَضَى عَنْهُ فَقَالَ أَوْفَيْتَ مَا عَلَيْهِ قَالَ نَعَمْ فَدَعَا بِهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ

English Translation
It was narrated from Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man from their community died and they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to pray over him, but he asked whether the man had any debts. They said he had debts and had left nothing. He ﷺ said: 'Then pray over him yourselves.' Abu Qatadah said: 'O Messenger of Allah, if I pay off his debt, will you pray over him?' He ﷺ said: 'If you pay it off fully, I will pray over him.' Abu Qatadah paid it off, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ then prayed over the man.
