English Translation

It was narrated that Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) entered Damascus and saw the heads of the Haruriyyah (Khawarij) mounted. He said: 'Dogs of the Fire! Dogs of the Fire! Dogs of the Fire! The worst of those killed under the sky, while the best of those killed are those whom they killed.' Then he wept. A man stood and said to him: 'O Abu Umamah, is what you say from your own opinion or something you heard?' He said: 'I would then be very bold indeed — how could I say this from my own opinion?' He said: 'I heard it more than once or twice.' He was asked: 'What makes you weep?' He said: 'I weep for their departure from Islam — these who divided and took their religion as sects.'
