Hadith #450
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ حَدَّثَنِي مَكْحُولٌ عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ رَبِيعٍ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ قَالَ صَلَّى بِنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الصُّبْحَ فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ صَلَاتِهِ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا بِوَجْهِهِ فَقَالَ إِنِّي لَأَرَاكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ خَلْفَ إِمَامِكُمْ إِذَا جَهَرَ قَالَ قُلْنَا أَجَلْ وَاللَّهِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَذَا قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا

English Translation
It was narrated from 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led them in the Fajr prayer and found the recitation heavy. When he finished, he turned to them and said: 'I see that you are reciting behind your imam when he recites aloud.' They said: 'Yes, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, that is the case.' He ﷺ said: 'Do not do so, except with Umm al-Qur'an, for there is no prayer for the one who does not recite it.'
