Hadith #495

حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَازِمٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ سَهْلَ بْنَ سَعْدٍ يَقُولُ أَنَا فِي الْقَوْمِ إِذْ دَخَلَتْ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهَا قَدْ وَهَبَتْ نَفْسَهَا لَكَ فَرَ فِيهَا رَأْيَكَ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ زَوِّجْنِيهَا فَلَمْ يُجِبْهُ حَتَّى قَامَتْ الثَّالِثَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ عِنْدَكَ شَيْءٌ قَالَ لَا قَالَ
اذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ قَالَ لَمْ أَجِدْ قَالَ فَاذْهَبْ فَاطْلُبْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ قَالَ مَا وَجَدْتُ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ قَالَ هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا قَالَ قَدْ أَنْكَحْتُكَهَا عَلَى مَا مَعَكَ مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ
English Translation
It was narrated from Sahl ibn Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that a woman came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying she had offered herself to him. A man asked to marry her. The Prophet ﷺ asked the man to find a dowry, and when he could find nothing — not even an iron ring — the Prophet ﷺ asked: 'Do you have anything of the Quran?' He said yes, such-and-such surahs. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'I marry her to you for what you have of the Quran.'
