حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنْ أَبِيهِ أَنَّهُ مَرَّ عَلَى مَجْلِسٍ وَهُمْ يَتَنَاوَلُونَ مِنْ عَلِيٍّ فَوَقَفَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُ قَدْ كَانَ فِي نَفْسِي عَلَى عَلِيٍّ شَيْءٌ وَكَانَ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ كَذَلِكَ فَبَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي سَرِيَّةٍ عَلَيْهَا عَلِيٌّ وَأَصَبْنَا سَبْيًا قَالَ فَأَخَذَ عَلِيٌّ جَارِيَةً مِنْ الْخُمُسِ لِنَفْسِهِ فَقَالَ خَا
لِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ دُونَكَ قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَدِمْنَا عَلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَعَلْتُ أُحَدِّثُهُ بِمَا كَانَ ثُمَّ قُلْتُ إِنَّ عَلِيًّا أَخَذَ جَارِيَةً مِنْ الْخُمُسِ قَالَ وَكُنْتُ رَجُلًا مِكْبَابًا قَالَ فَرَفَعْتُ رَأْسِي فَإِذَا وَجْهُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ تَغَيَّرَ فَقَالَ مَنْ كُنْتُ وَلِيَّهُ فَعَلِيٌّ وَلِيُّهُ

English Translation
It was narrated from Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he passed by a gathering where people were speaking ill of 'Ali. He stopped and said: 'I myself had something against 'Ali, and Khalid ibn al-Walid was the same. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on a military expedition under 'Ali's command, and we captured war booty. 'Ali took a slave-girl from the one-fifth for himself. Khalid ibn al-Walid urged me to report it. When I came to the Prophet ﷺ and began telling him what had happened, then said: "'Ali took a slave-girl from the one-fifth" — and I was a man who used to look downward — I raised my head, and the face of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had...'
