Hadith #170
Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ قُرْمٍ عَنِ الْأَشْعَثِ عَنْ عَمَّتِهِ رُهْمٍ عَنْ عَمِّهَا عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ خَلَفٍ قَالَ قَدِمْتُ الْمَدِينَةَ وَأَنَا شَابٌّ مُتَأَزِّرٌ بِبُرْدَةٍ لِي مَلْحَاءَ أَجُرُّهَا فَأَدْرَكَنِي رَجُلٌ فَغَمَزَنِي بِمِخْصَرَةٍ مَعَه
ُ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَمَا لَوْ رَفَعْتَ ثَوْبَكَ كَانَ أَبْقَى وَأَنْقَى فَالْتَفَتُّ فَإِذَا هُوَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّمَا هِيَ بُرْدَةٌ مَلْحَاءُ قَالَ وَإِنْ كَانَتْ بُرْدَةً مَلْحَاءَ أَمَا لَكَ فِي أُسْوَتِي فَنَظَرْتُ إِلَى إِزَارِهِ فَإِذَا فَوْقَ الْكَعْبَيْنِ وَتَحْتَ الْعَضَلَةِ

English Translation
It was narrated from Ubaydah ibn Khalaf that he said: 'I came to Madinah as a young man, wearing a striped garment that I was dragging. A man caught up with me and poked me with a stick he had, then said: If only you had raised your garment, it would last longer and be cleaner. I turned around and it was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: O Messenger of Allah, it is only a striped garment.' He said: 'And is that not the same?'
