Arabic Text
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ قَالَ كَانَ مَرْثَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ لَا يَجِيءُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ إِلَّا وَمَعَهُ شَيْءٌ يَتَصَدَّقُ بِهِ قَالَ فَجَاءَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ وَمَعَهُ بَصَلٌ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ أَبَا الْخَيْرِ مَا تُرِيدُ إِلَى هَذَا يُنْتِنُ عَلَيْكَ ثَوْب
َكَ قَالَ يَا ابْنَ أَخِي إِنَّهُ وَاللَّهِ مَا كَانَ فِي مَنْزِلِي شَيْءٌ أَتَصَدَّقُ بِهِ غَيْرُهُ إِنَّهُ حَدَّثَنِي رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ ظِلُّ الْمُؤْمِنِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ صَدَقَتُهُ

English Translation
It was narrated from Yazid ibn Abi Habib that Marthad ibn Abdillah never came to the mosque without bringing something to give in charity. One day he came to the mosque with an onion, and he said: O Abu al-Khayr, why do you do this — it will make your garment smell foul. He said: O nephew, by Allah, there was nothing in my house that I could give in charity other than this. Indeed, a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ narrated to me that every act of charity is a shade for its giver on the Day of Resurrection.
