English Translation

It was narrated from Sa'd (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet ﷺ visited him while he was ill in Makkah. He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all my wealth?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Then half?' He said: 'No.' He said: 'Then a third?' He said: 'A third, and a third is much. For you to leave your heirs wealthy is better than to leave them poor, begging from people. Indeed, you will not spend anything seeking the face of Allah except that you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you place in the mouth of your wife.' He said: 'O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my companions [i.e., will I die in Makkah away from Madinah]?' He said: 'You will not be left behind and do any righteous deed except that it will increase you in status and elevation. Perhaps you will live until peoples are benefited by you and others are harmed. O Allah, complete the emigration for my companions and do not turn them back on their heels.'
