English Translation

Ziyad ibn al-Rabi' Abu Khidash narrated to us, Wasil the freed slave of Abu 'Uyaynah narrated to us, from Bashshar ibn Abi Sayf al-Jarmi, from 'Iyad ibn Ghutayf, who said: We entered upon Abu 'Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah (رضي الله عنه) to visit him during an illness that had befallen him. His wife Tuhayfah was sitting by his head. I said: 'How did Abu 'Ubaidah spend the night?' She said: 'By Allah, he spent the night earning reward.' Abu 'Ubaidah said: 'I did not spend the night earning reward,' while his face was turned toward the wall. Then he turned to face the people and said: 'Will you not ask me about what I said?' They said: 'We were not pleased with what you said, so why would we ask you about it?' He said: 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever spends an extra expenditure in the path of Allah, it is multiplied seven hundred times. Whoever spends on himself and his family, or visits a sick person, or removes harm from the road, then a good deed is multiplied ten times. Fasting is a shield as long as one does not tear it. And whoever is afflicted by Allah with a trial in his body, it is an expiation for him.'
